Marketing Major to Accounting Professional

The Accounting Industry: Can Firms Keep Up?

I am a marketing major working at an accounting firm. If you would have told me 3 years ago that I would be working at an accounting firm I probably would have laughed in your face. I never in my life thought I would end up in this position. I have seen how many hours and hard work it can be to work as an accountant, so I never wanted to do it. Well, I was wrong to tell myself that! Fresh out of college I had the opportunity to work as an accountant. I told myself it is just a job out of college I will not be here forever. Two years and some months later I am still here.

Jonathan D. Frost, Founder & CEO, told me in a meeting one day, I am just marketing to our clients about taxes. I might be working on taxes, but I do have to market the work we do and the trust the client needs to have in us. It is so rare to actually have a career in what you majored in. Yes, most accountants are accounting majors but you have to learn new things at every job no matter if you went to school for it or not. I tell myself I spent so much time and money on a major I don’t even use, but does that really matter as long as you are in a position you are happy to be in?
